I saw someone post about the new ‘Oculus’ thing on Facebook and had to go check it out. I was blown away. Ever since I was a kid, I always dreamed of being completely immersed into a video game. Some 15 years later, there’s a KickStarter saying that I could get a dev kit for something doing just that for $300. Honestly, if I wasn’t going to Tokyo next month for Douse, I would probably jump on board. The KickStarter itself only has about 22 hours left at the time of this post, so it won’t be up for long. Oh did I mention they’ve already garnered 2.25 million/250 thousand dollars? I wrote that right, they are getting support like crazy. The link is here. (Oh and the video’s right here)
It’s actually really incredible that it isn’t just a great idea, but a working prototype at this point. The applications for something like this could be absolutely incredible. I know it’s not the first device of it’s kind, but it looks to be one of the best working and cheapest. The second that I started watching the video, my head starting buzzing with ideas of games that I could create with it. You could take immersion to an entirely new level with something like this. Combine this with some advanced 3D audio, some beautiful art, and a simple way to interact with your world and you’ve got an amazing game. If I had the money, I would use this in my game next year. These guys are doing some incredible things, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
